5 European Destinations Where Fall Means Warm Weather and Lower Hotel Prices

The weather is still good in October, and the hotel rates are not what they were in August.

Travelers planning a trip to Europe can find much lower hotel prices once summer ends, according to a new study by the digital entertainment platform BC Game. The weather in early and mid-fall is still good in southern Europe and the Mediterranean, a detail many travelers miss, BC Game’s CEO said in the study. Here are the five destinations that scored highest.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza took the top spot in the study with a perfect score of 100 out of 100. The same hotel room that costs $254 a night in summer drops to $60 in October, a 76% decrease and a savings of nearly $200 a night. Temperatures hold at 23°C (73°F), which is comfortable enough for exploring the old town or spending a day at the beach without the summer crowds.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini stays at 23°C (73°F) through October, and hotel rates drop by more than half, from $180 a night to $83. The island is one of the most crowded destinations in Europe at the height of summer, so going even a few weeks later changes more than the price.

Nice, France

Temperatures on the French Riviera average 21°C (70°F) in October, warm enough for outdoor dining and evening walks along the Promenade des Anglais. Hotel prices fall from $229 to $103 on average, a 55% drop that adds up over a week-long stay.

Barcelona, Spain

At 22°C (72°F), October lets you walk the Gothic Quarter, visit the Sagrada Família and spend time at the beach without the August heat. Hotel prices fall sharply too, from $282 a night in summer to $165 in fall.

Split, Croatia

Most people know Split as a summer stop, but October temperatures of 20°C (68°F) are comfortable for exploring the old town, and the cruise ship crowds have cleared out by then, which makes the historic center easier to walk around. Hotel prices drop from $260 to $117, a savings of 55%.

More Destinations Worth Booking

Four more European cities made the study’s top 10. Dubrovnik, Croatia, sees hotel prices fall 45%, from $313 to $172, at around 21°C (70°F); Lisbon drops 38%, from $147 to $91, at 23°C (73°F); Florence falls 26%, from $172 to $127, at 21°C (70°F); and Athens falls 21%, from $240 to $189, at 23°C (73°F).
